One of the better articles I have read lately. It does appear that one of the great problems with this nation is a lack of hope or belief that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Part of this is due to the nature of those in charge constantly drum beating that every problem is the end of the world.
Just take health care for instance... According to Obama and the Dems, if we do not pass it, people will go broke tomorrow and all life will cease to exist. If you listen to the Republicans, the world will end if we do pass the legislation because the Dems will make health care go away.
The economy, both sides are claiming it is the worst since the Depression and if we don't do something (cut taxes if you are Repub, spend more if you are a Dem, does it matter either way). They tend to forget that the 78-82 recession was likely worse (higher unemployment, higher interest rates, higher inflation, and sky high energy).
The war in Afghanistan is turning bad and to hear anyone talk about it, it will be the next Vietnam. They tend to forget though that casualties and progress in Afghanistan do not even begin to measure against Vietnam where 58,000 were killed. Yes, things are worse than the last couple years in Afghanistan, but overall, while progress is slow, to call it a failure or to predict failure at this point would be a long way off base.
Obama promised hope and change. I believe this is largely a message that appealed to a vast majority of people (hell, I could go for a little of it now). His biggest failure so far is his fights against his "enemies list." I wish he would understand that a little opposition comes with the territory (he should sit and talk to Bush sometime) and that his bickering with FoxNews is hardly bringing a lot of hope to the nation, change (we already had a Nixon), or progress to our problems.
The whole torture narrative with Gitmo and the CIA. To listen to our politicians, you would think that anyone who has ever been there is no better than an SS soldier sending people to the showers. They forget that these men and women are proud Americans who are doing their best to protect the nation. I am sure there are some bad apples, but the broad brush and hysteria tends to overlook that.
My point is that between all the apologizing to others and whipping our backs in shame, somewhere, those in charge have forgetting that for over 200 years we have been a beacon of hope. It may have shown brighter at one time or another, but it never went dark. I am beginning to wonder if maybe that time is coming where there is no beacon of hope, but rather we just become average. Like any other European or Western nation.

If
you look closely you will see the top marginal tax rate under Carter was 70% and Reagan brought it down to 28% over his 8 years in Office which resulted in one
of the best economic spans in the History of the USA. G.H.W. Bush raised it to 31% and got kicked out of office for it (See : Read My Lips No New Taxes) SHows
you haw stupid the American voter is at times since we booted Bush from Office because he raised taxes a little and elected a democrat who raised taxes alot
more.
