Coakley is beginning to really put her foot in her mouth. She just alienated 40% of the Mass voters who are Catholics by telling them they shouldn't work in emergency rooms due to their religious beliefs on Abortion (
http://washingtontimes.co...ics-probably-shouldnt-/)
and then other Dems like Schumer dismissing Brown as a Tea Bagger does not help her cause either as I think the Dems tend to underestistimate the power/passion of teh tea party movement.
This race is really the best sign so far of where the mood of the voters is heading. The Dems have really been downplaying it, but if they can not even maintain the Kennedy seat, they are likely in more serious trouble in November than most analysts currently believe. This is a relatively unknown state senator running against a woman who won state wide office as AG in a heavily Democratic state for a seat that belonged to a Dem icon. If they lose this one, it may be a sign that no Democrat is safe in any race unless they have a serious change of direction in their policies.
Now, will a Brown win stop Health Care? No, likely not. The Dems are going to ram that through come hell or high water. THat attitude of the Dems is why someone like Brown is surging ahead in this race and why come November, they may be a whole lot less Democrats in office. It is not the usual Dem in White House = Majority loss in Congress. This is more citizens are sick as hell of DC politics as usual and are willing to vote for anyone who just promises to leave them alone.
"Why would someone who voted for Obama not want healthcare to pass? It was one of the signature campaign promises he made."
Becuase Obama has broken every campaign promise he made on this single issue. He allowed for special interests to place sweet deals in the bill, allowed for political horse trading to favor some citizens over others, allowed for tax increases on the middle class, and in the end wound up with a bill that few people see as benefiting themselves or those who are uninsured.
You can not discount the large majority of Americans Keb who would like some form of Health Care reform. Hell, I would like to see some although I still prefer on the state level, but I would be open to some federal provisions that increased competition by allowing for purchases across state lines, made it easier to purchase an individual policy through an exchange or health care insurance store/agent, that allowed for the pooling of individuals in group plans who do not work together, etc. The problem with voters whether they voted for Obama or not is that this bill just sucks.
What DC Dems do not understand is that while a majority of Americans want reform of HC, they also want it done right and would prefer nothing over a bill that does more harm than good.
