You know what, just to get a chuckle out of whatever argument you try to make, I'll go ahead and offer a defense of Robertson's statement that you have declared indefensible.

In case you weren't aware, the man is a preacher. If he really believed what he said, then doesn't the 1st amendment give him the right to say it? Lets go over what he actually said. His citation is apparently correct and based on historical events that occured in Haiti. The lore, the myths of that country do record that the Haitians made a deal with the devil to help kick the French out. That apparently isn't even under dispute. Well what else do we know about Haiti? Its most popular religion is voodoo (voudou). Is it safe for me to assume that even someone like you actually knew this? A common perception of voodoo is that it is associated with worhsip of the devil, the existence of undead, cursing your enemies (i.e. pricking them with voodoo dolls) and so on. Whether these perceptions are true or not, it does not alter the fact that they are common perceptions.

So for someone with Robertson's background, the Haitian's practice of voodoo combined with the history of their "deal with the devil" can be viewed as evidence they are getting punished by God for their actions/sins. There are multiple references to such retribution (ex Sodom and Gomorrah, Noah's flood) in the Bible so its not surprising to hear a preacher say it. Feel free to make fun of Robertson for his beliefs. Like I mentioned earlier, it ranks right up there with Glover's.

The real blame for the extent of the damage is poverty. For that the Haitians can blame the leftwing authoritarian governments that have ruled the country for years. You don't see the same level of poverty in the Dominican Republic and they share the same island.
